TJ,
Funny you should mention this. Thinker and I were talking about this very thing last week.
We have come to the conclusion that many people who have been traumatized in some way are those who seem to need the strongest religious influence in their lives.
We kind of did a review of the people whom we know intimately enough to actually make an intelligent assessment, and each and every one of them had been traumatized in some way over the course of their life.
Now this is in no way to put them down. Because we also concluded that for many of these same one's it has seemed to have a positive effect in their life.
We reviewed Witnesses as well as non-witnesses. This of course is in no way a proffesional opinion. Just a personal one.
On the other hand, those who seem to have moved on from any trauma and are very content with themselves, don't seem to need this. I count myself in this class.
Interesting observations by all. Larc, enjoyed that report in particular.

what purpose religion?
by teejay inlast night a program remembered the japanese attack on pearl harbor sixty years ago.
amidst all the historical details, a story of a serviceman stood out.
he was a youngster then, still in his teens and stationed in hawaii, when he sent his mom a card to let her know of his condition.

My Profound and Wise 1000th post...
by Billygoat ina few minutes before the services started, the townspeople were sitting in their pews talking.
suddenly, satan appeared at the front of the room.
everyone started screaming and running for the entrance, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away from evil incarnate.. soon everyone had exited the church except for one elderly gentleman who sat calmly in his pew without moving, seeming oblivious to the fact that god's ultimate enemy was in his presence.. satan walked up to the old man and said, "don't you know who i am?".

Man, I wish I would have watched that again when it was on TV. Rented the movie a couple of years ago. And I remember thinking it was odd how strict her parents were. But it went right over my head that they might have been Witnesses. Missed the Live Forever Book too.
Might have to rent the movie and check it out again!!

Dorky,
Weird, I have re-contacted my aunt whom I haven't seen since 1985. She is very religious. She and her husband have started three churches in Tyler, TX. As a result of some of her comments to me on religion, Thinker and I were discussing this very subject last Sunday.
Just makes no sense to me at all. I feel exactly as you mentioned Dood.
BTW, good to see you again. Haven't seen you for awhile, unless I have just missed your posts!!

What was your JW wedding song?

Neon,
Thanks for refreshing my memory. I couldn't for the life of me remember until you said it. I thought that was the closest thing to a wedding march.
Oh May We Ever Live Up to Our Name. Yep that was the one.
I am a great music lover and I was really miffed that I couldn't choose classical music.
As the marriage was a fiasco perhaps it was a good thing that we didn't use anything truly beautiful!! LOL

Oz,
Absolutely I remember the green songbook.
What is interesting to me is that some of the songs over the years had a definite resemblance (certainly not the majority of them most of them stink) to some of Christendom's "pagan" music.

Dazed,
I too remember reading in a Watchtower or Awake that MJ had da'ed himself.
Do you remember the exact issue?
I want my friend who is still a Witness to access it.
Thanks in advance.

Great stories!!
I had a wonderful friend who is still a Witness and things were always happening to us.
One time she got up and went to the restroom during the meeting. When she walked back into the auditorium her skirt had gotten caught in the top of her panties. It kind of looked like she was wearing coulottes (however the hell you spell that). Her son was conducting the meeting that day and he is one of those impatient guys with his mother's shennanigans. Of course everyone started nudging each other and laughing. He had no clue what was going on, just that the meeting was being interrupted. (She was sitting all the way up in the front row) Another sister who prided herself on being discreet, NOT. Kind of like a strange MataHari twist. Slid out of her seat and slunk over and sat beside skirt stuck in the panties friend. Whispered in her ear what all the ruckus was about. Panties started to loudly moan "God, Oh my God. God. God. God." Needless to say there was no more listening to the meeting that day!!
What fun. It could only have happened to her or me, which I so aptly pointed out to her after the meeting!!

Tammie,
On a kind of related subject. My Dad is 64 years old and Mom is 59. Dad has been a witness since he was sixteen, Mom fifteen.
I had a lot of unhappy years. Since I left the WT, I am happier now than I have ever been.
Since I disassociated myself in June of 2000, my relationship with them has been weird at best.
(also wanted to mention they are both pioneering Dad for over forty years) They are missing out on the happiest years of my life. Thinker thinks they keep hoping "I will come to my senses". How sad is that.
Anything could happen at this point in their life and what are they doing? Wasting it on pointless rules that a cult has ingrained in their minds. I keep trying to think it is their loss. But it is very difficult. I would love to be able to share my joy with the two wonderful people that brought me into this world. But I can't.

The Rainbow as a sign to Noah
by Simon ini don't know if this has ever been brought out - i just thought of it:.
the bible tells us that it rained for forty days and forty nights.. it stopped raining and noah & co floated around for a bit.. when they landed, noah sacrificed some of the animals (weren't they in short supply?
) and god promised never to bring a deluge upon then earth again.. to back this up, there was a rainbow in the sky as a sign.. now, what causes a rainbow?

AlanF,
Interesting research on the document the Society used to support their belief.
It doesn't really matter to me since I don't believe the Bible is inspired.
I did find it interesting when I was in Europe, I believe I was in a Cathredral in Rome, I saw a statue hanging on a stake, above it the inscription read "stauros". I was still an active witness then, so I found that really exciting.
Knowing though that the documentation used had 3/4 of the depictions as actual crosses is interesting.

by Englishman inthis friday, december 7th., is our 28th wedding anniversary.
her ladyship and i intend to visit our favourite restaurant, dimitri's, for a slap-up greek meal plus a considerable quantity of excellent wine.. its a time when we like to reflect on our life together, the lows as well as the highs that we have experienced over the years.
